Chiropractic Maintenance Care: What Exactly is it?
Lower back pain is one the most expensive work injuries reported in the United States. Many issues can arise from it, from the mundane to the severe. After a few months of regular treatment many of these ailments can be resolved or, at least, under control. After that some patients choose to continue receiving adjustments. This is when chiropractic maintenance begins.
Studies have shown that most chiropractic patients had less expenses in regards to medical care, and shorter periods of disability than in other cases. Chiropractic patients that have had regularly maintained adjustments had fewer surgeries and needed fewer opioids. Patients also had a reduced recurrence of lower back disabilities as a result of regular chiropractic adjustment. In addition to that, the cost of chiropractic care is far less expensive than other alternatives.
Maintenance chiropractic care is when a patient who has suffered from some pain or ailment that was resolved through chiropractic adjustment, continues to return either once a month, or as often as once a week, to have an adjustment. The frequency that a person needs to visit varies upon the age, trauma, job, activity level, diet, and overall health of the person. Each person’s maintenance plan is unique.
How can Regular Maintenance Care Prevent Future Injuries?
As mentioned above, research has shown that regular chiropractic care can help to reduce neck and back pain along with multiple other ailments. This form of treatment can work better than traditional medicine, physical therapy, or massage therapy. With regular maintenance visits, there are many long-term benefits to be found.
Neck and back pain are two of the most common chronic lifelong health issues. The average American will experience one if not more bouts of neck or back pain. The need for a long-term solution is vital to avoid the need of expensive drugs or invasive surgeries that could result in worse side effects. It will also help to do more than just treat the pain, it helps to resolve the cause.
Medical, not chiropractic, studies that have recently been released have stated that chiropractic care will help prevent future occurrences of lower back issues and help to assist long-term corrections. That means that medical professionals acknowledge the health and healing benefits of chiropractic adjustments.
A study from the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, followed 894 worker’s compensation cases for a one year period. The study was done to see the individual’s response to chiropractic care in comparison to other types of healthcare. The goal was to see the likelihood of a disability reoccurring after treatment of work-related lower back pain.
The results found that compared to physical therapists and medical doctors, patients that went to chiropractors had the least likelihood of having a reoccurrence of their disability during that year. This showed that an injured worker that continued to receive chiropractic adjustments their chances of re-injury in comparison to other workers, during the year after the initial accident, was substantially less.
A study published in Spine in 2011, found that in regards to non-specific, chronic lower back pain, spinal manipulation therapy resulted in higher quality long term results. Spinal manipulation therapy, or SMT, is the term that some medical studies use to refer to chiropractic adjustment
This study took 60 patients who suffered from chronic, nonspecific, lower back pain for a minimum of 6 months, and split them into 3 different groups. The first group had 12 visits of placebo based care over the course of a month. The second had 12 real chiropractic spinal adjustments over the course of a month, but had not additional treatments for the next 9 months. The final group had 12 months of real chiropractic adjustment for 1 month, and for 9 months afterwards received “maintenance spinal manipulation” every 2 weeks
The results from the study found that patient in the second and third groups, that had received some form of chiropractic spinal adjustment, experienced substantially lower levels of pain and lowered disability scores at the end of the first month than the first group that only received implied chiropractic care. In addition, the third group showed even lower levels of pain and disability after the additional 9 months of maintenance adjustments.
The study concluded that spinal manipulation treatment was effective in treating the symptoms of lower back pain, and that the use of maintenance spinal manipulations after the initial rounds of SMT would provide long-term benefits.
Spinal adjustments are not only effective in the finding long term relief of lower back pain, but also in preventing degenerative joint disease and in maintaining a healthy nervous system.
